Getting started
Your first hour: the pack, the controls and your first tool.
Your first minutesYou land empty-handed. A few minutes of gathering gets you your first tools.
Controls and comfortWhat each stick and button does, and where the comfort options live.
Field packYour pack opens in mid-air between your hands. It holds everything you own.
HolstersHolsters on your hips and back keep your tools within reach, even with the pack closed. Each one remembers its tool.Settings and comfortSettings and comfortSettings on the pack edge change how you move, see and carry. Everything is yours to pick.
Pack trayThe tray under your pack makes the first things you need: stone tools, a campfire, torches and a workbench.
Placing kitsHold a kit over the ground, check the ghost and let go to place it. A bad spot costs nothing.
Health, stamina and foodThree bars on your wrist, and a breath meter under water.Gather and make
Wood, stone and ore, and the tools that get them.
Gathering by handFists work on wood, stone and ground. Tools only make it faster.
Felling treesCut right through a trunk and the top comes down. Stand clear, then chop the log into wood.
Mining and maulsSwing a maul at rock and it breaks away in chunks. The harder the swing, the more it takes.
Finding oreOre sits in pockets in the stone. The deeper you dig, the better it gets.
Tool wearAxes, mauls, swords and bows wear out. Watch the bar under the tool's name in your pack.
Fruit and plantingPicked fruit grows back. Drop a ripe plum or berries on good soil and a new plant takes root.Camp and survival
Fire, food, light and somewhere safe to sleep.
CampfireLight, warmth and the place you cook. Grass fibre catches, wood keeps it burning.
Cooking stickStab food onto the point, hold it over a fire and pull it off when it has browned.
Camp stoveA stove with one big grill plate. Set food on it and it cooks by itself, and burns if you forget it.
TorchesA torch is lit while you hold it and dark in your pack. Press the handle into a wall to leave it behind.
Bedroll and sleepingPut a bedroll down somewhere sheltered and lie on it at night. The night passes and you wake at dawn.
Food and eatingBring food to your mouth and hold it there. Cooked food fills you far more than raw.Materials
Where each material comes from: look it up by name.

Raptor eggAn egg from the nests of Rustwings and Gloamtalons.Where to find materialsWhere to find materialsEvery material in the game and where it comes from, in one list.Machines
Workbenches and stations that make the good stuff.
Crafting at benchesEvery bench works the same way: lay materials on it, page to a design and work at it until it is made.
WorkbenchThe first bench. It makes the kits for the other benches, and its add-ons open them in order.
SmelterOre, sand and scrap go in the hopper and fuel in the fire. Ingots and glass come out on the tray.
ForgeCopper and iron tools: axes and mauls that outlast stone, and a hammer for hard rock.
Sword benchWhere blades and the leather vest are made. Its add-ons open better steel, one step at a time.
Powder benchGrind powder at its mill, then press it into bombs. A casing mould opens iron bombs and blast rods.
Bow tableBows on its press, arrows on its jig. A sinew binder opens the reinforced bow.
Gun tableThe plasma pistol and rifle and their cells. The power coil opens the rifle.
Alchemist's tableHealing potions, bone meal, venom arrows and the charcoal pencil.
Sawmill tablePull its saw arm down to cut wall and roof pieces, doors, windows, ladders, chests, tables and drawing boards.
RecyclerPut things you have crafted into the hopper and get part of the materials back.
ChestsRelease a stack onto an empty spot on the grid, or grip one to take it.
Drawing boardHang one on a wall and draw on it with the charcoal pencil. Rub it out with your hand.
ArmouryThe old armoury is now four benches. Each one makes the weapons that suit it.Build and explore
Shelters, climbing, water and the caves below.
BuildingPut up a home from sawn wood, glass and stone. Hold a piece where you want it and let go.
Doors and windowsPush them, or grab the handle and swing. A door eases shut by itself; a window stays where you leave it.
ClimbingGrab a ledge or a ladder rung with an empty hand and pull. Both hands can hold your weight.
Swimming and divingWade in, look where you want to go, and push. Watch your breath underwater.
CavesChambers and tunnels under the ground, pitch dark, full of ore and the things that live in it.
Adventure tunnelsCave passages made for people: tight squeezes, ledges, chasms and pits that you cross by climbing, jumping or digging.Weapons and combat
Swords, bows, bombs and the moves that win a fight.
MeleeA blow counts when it is a real swing. Pressing a weapon against something does nothing.
Bow and arrowsTake the string with your free hand to nock an arrow, draw back and let go.
SwordsEvery sword is made at the sword bench, and each kind has a trick of its own.
Plasma weaponsA blade that comes back to your hand, and guns that run on cells.
Bombs and blastingLight the fuse at any fire and throw. Blast rods give the blast hammer its punch.
Combat movesBlocking, shoving, knocking arrows away and what the numbers on a hit mean.Creatures
Who is out there, what they do and how to deal with them.
HollowSkeletons that guard ruins, walk the plains at night and live in the caves. The deeper you go, the better armed they are.
Frontier raidersArmoured hunters with amber visors and plasma rifles. They come to camps that look rich.
SpirecrawlerA pale cave arthropod. It bites from below a ledge, drops on you from above and throws blue fireballs.
BramblemawA low, plum-coloured crawler with green eyes that lashes with its tendrils.
Cave pouncerA dark ambusher with amber eyes. It stalks, crouches, then leaps.
VaultmawA ceiling hunter with sharp hearing. It hangs upside-down, creeps above you and drops.
RiftstalkerA giant cave spider. Rare, deep, and the biggest thing you will fight in the caves.
ReefmawThe shark of Starworn. A big fish predator that waits below the water and bites from beneath.
WildlifeHerds of animals share the plains with you. Each has its own temper, and they carry the leather and meat you need.
Cave batsBats roost on cave ceilings in colonies. Some flutter off when disturbed, some defend their roost with dives.
DripwingsSlate-grey bats that hang like stalactites under tall cave roofs and dive at your torch.
EarwightA blind hunter of the deep. It hunts by sound and scent, and its clicks tell you it is near.
PitcoilsBanded constrictors that hang from stalactites in the upper caves and lash down to bite at your face.
VeilgripSealed capsules that hang from deep cave ceilings. Warmth wakes them, and the hatchling springs at your face.
Ceiling stalkerA black spider with very long legs and a single glowing mark. It darts in to bite, then backs off and watches.
Birds of preyRustwings and Gloamtalons guard their perches and nests. They screech, then dive.
Robot patrolsSignal guards and Sentry spheres march out of the Signal Keep. They are a step up from Veteran Hollows.
BeesHoneybells tend the flowers around a hive under a tree crown. Thornstings guard it.World and friends
Seasons, your pod, and playing together.
Days, seasons and weatherDays and nights pass, the moon waxes and wanes, seasons turn, and weather rolls through.
Your pod and dyingYour pod brought you here. When you perish it prints you a new body, and what you carried waits in a satchel where you fell.
Playing togetherOpen your world to friends and build, explore, cook and fight together.
Sandbox worldsA world mode where the host sets the sky and the rules, and sets out chests of materials to build with.
Your worlds and savesA named list of worlds, each Survival, Peaceful or Sandbox, with export, import and Meta cloud backup.A to Z
