Privacy policy
This policy explains what data the game Starworn and the website starworn.net collect, why, and what you can do about it. We collect as little as we can, and we never sell your data or use it for advertising.
Who we are
Starworn is made by Holonautic Ltd., which is responsible for the data described here:
Holonautic Ltd.Tannegg 4
6005 St. Niklausen
Switzerland
info@holonautic.com
Our data protection officer can be reached at the same address. This policy covers Starworn and starworn.net; our other games and holonautic.com are covered by the Holonautic privacy policy.
The website
starworn.net uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party trackers. Fonts, images and videos are served from our own server, so visiting the site does not contact anyone else.
Like any web server, ours records technical connection logs: your IP address, the time, the page requested and your browser's user agent. We use them only to keep the site running and secure, and they are deleted automatically after at most 31 days.
The game
Gameplay statistics and crash reports
To learn how Starworn is played and to fix problems, the game sends statistics to our own server. They include:
- a random installation ID and a random player ID, created on your device and not linked to your Meta account;
- the game version, platform, headset or device model and game settings;
- session information, such as when you played, for how long and how the session ended;
- what happened in play, such as items crafted or gathered, creatures defeated, milestones reached, deaths and their cause, and whether you played alone or in multiplayer;
- when the game crashes, the error message and technical trace, with file paths and other identifying details removed.
These statistics do not include your chat, your voice, your exact position in the world or your saved worlds. We use them in aggregate to improve the game. Like the website, the server that receives them keeps technical connection logs, including IP addresses, which are deleted automatically after at most 31 days.
Name, friends and multiplayer
The display name you choose in the game is stored on our server so other players can find you. If you use Friends, we also store your friend code, your friends and friend requests (including any message you write with one), the people you recently played with, and how your character looks, so your friends list can show it.
When you host a game, the game lists it in our lobby, with its public connection key and room details, so others can join. It lists your key, not your IP address.
Connections between players
Multiplayer connects players' devices directly, using the open-source iroh networking library. Players you play with can see your IP address, as with any direct connection. To help devices find each other, your device publishes its connection key and network addresses to a discovery service run by n0, the developers of iroh. When a direct connection is not possible, traffic passes, end-to-end encrypted, through one of n0's relay servers.
Voice chat
In multiplayer, your voice is sent live to players whose characters are near yours, through the player hosting the game. We do not record or store voice.
Meta
Starworn is distributed through the Meta Horizon Store. Your Meta account, purchases and anything your headset shares with Meta are handled by Meta under Meta's privacy policy. We do not receive your Meta account details.
Why we use this data
We process data under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where it applies, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We use gameplay statistics and crash reports because we have a legitimate interest in understanding how the game is played and in fixing faults. We use your name, friends and lobby data to provide the multiplayer features you choose to use.
How long we keep it
Statistics and crash reports are kept while they help us improve the game, and deleted when they no longer do. Friends and name data are kept while you use these features, and deleted at your request.
Your rights
You can ask us which data we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, or to restrict or stop processing it; write to info@holonautic.com. Because the game does not know who you are, please tell us your display name and friend code so we can find your data. Uninstalling the game removes its data from your device, including its installation ID. Depending on where you live, you can also complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Starworn is intended for teens and adults and is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If the game starts collecting something new, we will update this page and the date at the top before that version is released.
