Starworn is a voxel sandbox reimagined for VR: a world you can tear apart, enemies that come apart with it, and light that keeps up with everything you do.

Your replicator remade you on an alien world. Start with wood and stone; make a shelter before dark. Explore the first world alone or with friends, and see what each update brings.

What makes Starworn different

Physical, all the way down

Every block, every enemy and every flame is physical. Reach out and the world reacts.

Destroy

A world you can take apart

Swing an axe and the tree comes down. Tunnel into a hillside, quarry a cliff, bring a wall down: what you cut stays cut. Nearly everything is made of voxels you can break, from terrain and trees to buildings and machines.

  • Chop trees down and watch them fall in pieces
  • Dig tunnels and quarries wherever you like
  • Break your own walls and machines too
Fight

Enemies with real bodies

Every enemy is built from tiny voxels, and your weapons cut into them. Take off an arm and its attacks weaken, damage a leg and it slows down, and when it finally falls, it falls apart.

  • Head shots hurt more
  • Blades and arrows catch in the wounds they make
  • Blind a creature and it has to hunt by sound
Light

Light that keeps up with you

Break through a cave ceiling and daylight pours in. Build a roof and the room goes dark beneath it. The lighting keeps up with everything you change, so the world feels alive.

  • Mount torches on stone and walls
  • Fires and glowing materials light their surroundings
  • Nights get properly dark
Climb

Grab hold and pull yourself up

Reach out, grab a trunk, a branch or a ledge and pull yourself up, hand over hand. Trees are a way up, and the view from the canopy is worth the climb.

  • Grab trunks, branches and ledges
  • Both hands do the work, one grip at a time
  • Look down and see how far you have come
Explore

Your first world

Follow a river into the woods, dive among lantern jellies, or dig into a cave. The world keeps going below your feet.

Gather & build

Make a home here

Chop a tree, mine the rock and make a place to stay. Every wall goes where you put it.

Details

Doors that just work

Doors are famously hard to get right in VR. Ours have a real handle and hinges: reach out, grab the handle and swing the door open or shut, the way you would at home.

Mining & crafting

Mine it, then forge it

Swing a maul at the rock and ore comes loose. Carry it back to camp and work it into tools at the forge and anvil, one hammer blow at a time.

Wildlife

Meet the locals

Herds of peaceful animals share the plains with you, from horned Brackenbacks to striped Dunesails. Set up camp and enjoy the company.

Creatures

Not everything is friendly

Morrows graze. Reefmaws wait below the water. Hollow skeletons are less inclined to leave you alone.

Co-op

Bring your friends along

Chop trees together, explore below ground, or compare skewers around the fire. Open your world and make room for friends.

Seasons

Through the seasons

The woods change colour, the snow settles, and familiar paths look different after dark.

Camp life

Cook by hand

Skewer food, roast it over the fire and pull it free when it's ready.

The studio

Made by Holonautic

Our name joins holo, “whole”, and naut, “sailor”: explorers of a new medium. Since 2018, that has meant making games for VR.

Our first game, Holoception, was fully immersive, with a novel third-person mechanic, and Starworn carries much of its DNA, from physics-based combat to holstered weapons. Since then we have made Hand Physics Lab, which brought our knowledge of physics to hand tracking, as well as Cybrix, Surgineer and Boom Boom Hamster Doom.

Starworn brings together what we love most about VR: interactions that feel right, the thrill of discovery, the feeling of really being there, and sharing a new world with friends, wherever they are. It starts in Early Access so players can help shape it.

What you can do today

  • A world you can take apart

Dig, chop and blast your way through a voxel world where nearly everything can be destroyed, and what you cut stays cut.

  • Landscapes worth exploring

Every world is generated from a seed: rivers and lakes, ridges and forests, and caves that run deeper than they first appear.

  • Craft and build your home

Hammer your own gear together, then build a shelter piece by piece: walls, doors, windows, roofs and ladders.

  • Swim and dive

Wade into the lakes, swim down and hold your breath. Something is always living beneath the surface.

  • Wildlife

Herds graze the plains, birds and bats fill the sky and the caves, and lantern jellies drift in the water.

  • Enemies

Hunters come out at night, raiders wind up before they fire, and creatures that lose a limb fight on with the rest.

  • An arsenal of weapons

Swords and axes, bows and thrown tools, all the way to plasma pistols. Every swing, throw and shot is decided by your hands.

  • Encounters

Come across interesting encounters out in the world, from small camps and lairs to something far bigger, and decide whether to sneak in, fight through or leave them alone.

Roadmap

Still to come

Early Access grows update by update. These are our plans, without dates, and they will change with your feedback.

  • Coming

    Deeper crafting

More machines, more materials and more tiers of tools and equipment to work towards.

  • Coming

    Farm and cook

Grow more kinds of food and cook it in more ways as your camp grows.

  • Coming

    Homes that grow

More building parts and more ways to make a shelter your own.

  • Coming

    More life

New creatures, and more to find, gather and make from what you meet.

  • Further out

    Ride and tame

Climb onto a creature’s back, and one day tame and steer a mount of your own.

  • Further out

    Something out there

Bigger encounters and stranger places, some of them worth gathering friends for.

  • Further out

    Beyond the first world

Spaceships and journeys between worlds, the search for survivors, and whoever destroyed your planet.
